Doing this intercultural experience helped me realize how uncomfortable it can feel to be in a situation where you don’t really know what to expect. Trying something new and asking questions instead of making assumptions made a big difference in how the experience went. It made me think about how patients might feel in the dental office if things are unfamiliar to them or outside of what they’re used to. This helped me understand the importance of being patient, open-minded, and willing to adapt how I communicate and educate each person. This experience supports Program Outcome Goal #3 by showing my ability to provide more individualized, patient-centered care for people from different backgrounds.
