Volunteer Work
Reflecting on this volunteer experience, I recognize how valuable it was in shaping my readiness for the dental hygiene profession. Assisting with Free Dental Day gave me a firsthand appreciation of the importance of compassion, adaptability, and teamwork when serving diverse populations. It also emphasized that dental professionals have a responsibility to extend care beyond financial barriers and meet people where they are. I learned that even small efforts, like volunteering time and skills, can significantly improve someone's oral health and quality of life. This experience affirmed my dedication to pursuing dental hygiene and demonstrated that my abilities, interests, and work ethic align with PMI's program goals.
"The Experience"
Prior to entering the dental hygiene program, I participated in volunteer work through my former dental office’s annual Free Dental Day. Our team of assistants, hygienists, and dentists worked together to provide services such as cleanings, fillings, and extractions at no cost to patients in need. This event was offered to new patients, uninsured individuals, those who had exhausted their insurance benefits, or those with coverage our practice could not accept. Working long hours as a team to serve the community reinforced my commitment to patient care and my passion for dentistry. Volunteering in this capacity allowed me to expand my clinical and interpersonal skills while gaining experience in treating a wide range of patient needs. This service experience further motivated me to pursue a career in dental hygiene, where I can continue making a positive impact.
